Overview

This guide explains how to connect Tableau to Connetra using a Tableau Personal Access Token (PAT). Once configured, Connetra can discover Tableau workbooks, dashboards, data sources, and build lineage between Tableau assets and upstream data warehouse tables.

Step 1: Enable the Tableau Metadata API (Tableau Server only)

⚠️ Skip this step if you are using Tableau Online.

If you are running Tableau Server, the Metadata API must be enabled by a Tableau administrator.

Steps:

  • Open a command prompt as an administrator on the initial Tableau Server node (where TSM is installed)
  • Run the following command:
    • tsm maintenance metadata-services enable

Step 2: Create a Tableau Personal Access Token (PAT)

Connetra uses a Tableau Personal Access Token to authenticate securely.

Steps:

  • Log in to Tableau using an account with Site Administrator privileges
  • Click your avatar and select My Account Settings
  • Scroll to Personal Access Tokens
  • Enter a token name and click Create new token
  • Copy and store both the token name and token secret, they will not be shown again

Step 3: Gather Tableau Connection Details

You will need the following information:

  • Host Name: The base Tableau URL before the #
       Example: https://prod-useast-b.online.tableau.com
  • Site ID: The value immediately following /#/site/ in the URL

Step 4: Add the Integration in Connetra

    In Connetra:

    • Navigate to Settings → Data Connectors → Select Tableau Data Tool
    • Select Tableau
    • Enter :
      • Public Access Token Name
      • Public Access Token
      • Base URL
      • Site ID
    • Click Test Connection and Save the connector configurations

Once connected, Connetra will begin syncing Tableau assets and metadata.

Troubleshooting

Authorization failures:

  • Re-generate a Tableau Personal Access Token
  • Update the token in Connetra

PAT expiration:

  • Ensure the PAT expiry is long enough if syncs run every 15 days or longer

Notes & Best Practices

  • Tableau Online does not require Metadata API configuration
  • Use Site Admin accounts for token creation
  • Rotate PATs before expiry to avoid sync interruptions
